I love elephants. I think they’re absolutely beautiful. There’s something in the way that they move, the gentleness in their eyes, and the feeling of age and simplicity that just hovers around them that makes them so beautiful. Every time I see one, picture, TV, in person, cartoon, whatever… I just feel so peaceful. Maybe like they are guarding the Earth and watching over us all like some kind of primal animal parents or something.
Dragging out my beaten and battered copy of Ted Andrews “Animal Speak” – Elephant is apparently a symbol of primal power. He also mentions how they live almost in tribes – herds led by an elder and split up by gender. So the males in one herd, led by an elder male, and the females and babies in another, led by an elder.
According to Life After People on Discovery or National Geographic (I forget), Mammoths were once VERY common in North American – in fact, many remains have been found in the tar pits of California. I wonder why there are no ‘native’ species of elephant here, then? In addition, Life After People states that elephants would adapt perfectly to a north american climate and that the herds in the zoos would take no time at all to become one of the more dominant species, since they have few natural predators and are very difficult for those predators to take down – usually the babies are the target as a result. I think seeing an elephant roaming the ruins of LA would be a beautiful thing – of course, I love to just watch them move.
Just thinking about them makes me feel centered and at peace with the world. What animals move you?
