How to Make a Sachet

Sachets are small bags filled with herbs typically for a magical purpose. They are either squares with their corners tied together or sewn together like small pillows.

  1. Find a square piece of fabric at least 4 inches long on each side (larger squares can be used depending on taste). Use a natural or organic fabric such as cotton.
  2. Place your herbal mixture in the center of the fabric
  3. Lift all four corners up and bring together over the center of the fabric, creating a pyramid shape.
  4. Holding the corners with one hand, wrap a string or ribbon around the fabric just above the mixture you placed in the center. This string should also be of a natural or organic fabric.
  5. Tie closed.

  1. Find a square piece of fabric at least 4 inches long on each side (larger squares can be used depending on taste). Use a natural or organic fabric such as cotton.
  2. Fold your fabric in half.
  3. Sew the two sides perpendicular to the fold closed, leaving the side opposite the fold open.
  4. Turn inside out so the seams are now on the inside.
  5. Insert your chosen mixture into the opening.
  6. Holding both sides of the fabric together, fold over the opening and sew closed.

There are other ways to make sachets and you can of course decorate them in any way that you like. You can also include small charms in your sachets if you want, though you should be mindful of how they’ll be used (avoid hard things in sachets intended to go in pillows, for example).

Here’s a recipe for a sleeping sachet intended to go in your pillow, aid relaxation, and prevent nightmares from Crabtree and Evelyn’s Fragrant Herbal:

  • 2 tablespoons of dried lavender
  • 1.5 teaspoons of dried rosemary
  • 1 teaspoon of dried chamomile flowers
  • 2 teaspoons of Orris powder

Mix ingredients together and place inside a sachet and place the sachet inside your pillow.

What’s your favorite sachet?
