I’m Not Perfect and I don’t Have To Be

I’m sure they didn’t REALLY think about what they were saying, it was probably just one of those comments made off the cuff and casually. But it still stopped me mid scroll. A couple of my colleagues made comments to the effect that people who don’t have their own lives pulled together shouldn’t offer to help other people with theirs. I’m almost positive they were talking about politics in some way, but they might not have been. Regardless, their comments really struck me. I don’t have everything neatly in place in my life – I’ve got problems. So does everyone else. I’m human, it happens. Just because my friend doesn’t have everything right in her life doesn’t mean I won’t ask for her advice on things.

In fact, I feel like you’re not really living if you don’t have some obstacle you’re facing – something to overcome. It’s like you’ve stopped learning altogether and are just running through the motions. I want help from somebody down in the trenches with me who knows what it’s like to have things stacked against you and screw up once in awhile. A common sentiment among life coaches and counselors of all walks is that whatever issue you’re working on, that’s what your clients are going to be walking in with. We learn and grow together. My experience helping you might shine a light on one of my own imperfections, and that’s okay. It doesn’t mean the guidance I gave was bad, it just means I need to apply it, too.

It may be over-cautious of me, but frankly I’m wary of anyone who says they don’t have any issues or problems facing them.
