Let’s Talk About Fairies!

Okay, so with the letter “F” coming up this week, how can I resist fairies? I’m no expert, not by any means, but there is stuff that I do know.

So, let’s start with the basic. Most fairies (but not all) are nature spirits. Others are air, earth, water, and fire spirits. I’m not sure why nature gets singled out as kind of a fifth element – perhaps it’s a particular combination of the other elements, but there you have it. This means that the best place to find fairies is out in natural places. Wild places have more fairies, but that’s not to say they are rare in the city or urban landscape, because they’re pretty common there, too.

Urban fairies are really very quirky. Bikers have a superstition of gremlins that cause bolts to come loose and potholes in the ground and these are, in fact, fairies. There are fairies that love electronics, machines, and just ask your dog or cat if there are any little spirits wandering around your home. The only place you won’t find fairies are in places that are extremely toxic or extremely boring (although they do like to mess with boring people).  There are small things that will evidence a fairy in your environment. For instance, in my home, every one of my glass bowls has a chip in the edge. Just one, mind you, not multiples, and they’re all about the same shape and size. Some of these bowls are 20 years old – I took them with me when I moved out of my dad’s home and still have them. Some are 10 years old – the first plate sets I bought myself – and some I just bought last year! And it’s ONLY bowls – no cups, plates, sauces, mixing bowls, any of that. Just regular old bowls.

That’s the kind of mischief that normally reveals the presence of a fairy. I have friends who, no matter where they move their coffee table, they will inevitably run into it. I have friends whose cats are constantly harassed by an unseen presence. I have a philodendron in an apple juice jar that I’ve had seven or eight years and in that time I’ve moved about a dozen times and that plant never dries out and has never come to harm. It’s a beautiful plant and I love it dearly, but I can’t take the credit for it’s good health. I have a salsa dish that I keep my “working” crystals in. I also have 3 boxes with my ‘non-working’ gemstones in. The contents of these boxes and this salsa dish are rearranged by someone on occasion. And I’ve even had a quartz crystal point delivered to my home that we discovered in the couch cushions.

It’s these kind of small ways that fairies effect your lives. To encourage their activity and helpfulness in your life, respect what they do. I don’t bother about the chips in my bowls, I always give a little thanks when I visit my plant, and I laugh when I can’t find a crystal I KNOW was in my salsa bowl just an hour ago. They also LOVE beautiful things – music, artwork, etc. and a great way to attract their presence is to learn to play an instrument, hang wind chimes, or place bells and fountains around your environment. Leave a little patch in your yard to run wild – when I move in, I’ll till a section of the yard, toss in a native seed pack, and let it go and do what it wants – that makes a wonderfully perfect little fairy home.
