Okay, even though spider isn’t technically an animal, birds, insects, arachnids, reptiles and fish all have medicine too!

Today we’re looking at arachnidae, the spider. While a lot of modern culture focuses on fearing spiders, they have long held a sacred and honored place with ancient cultures. Spiders have the unique trait of spinning and weaving webs which has captured the interest of mankind. This web weaving represents a lot of different traits that spiders carry, the first of which is the feminine force of creativity. The web designs of spiders are vary from species to species and can be very simple or intricate. Many ancient peoples believed that spider brought mankind the first alphabet, allowing him to finally record his experiences in detail.

Spider, unlike insects, has two body segments instead of three. Combined with their eight legs, instead of 6 like insects, they also carry with them the medicine of balance an eternity. The number 8 on it’s side is the symbol for infinity, which the spider’s body shares and the same number of legs the spider has. Combined with the way spiders weave and balance on their webs, spider carries a very powerful medicine of balancing in the infinite. Being symbolic of the infinite, spider teaches us about balancing the past, the present, and the future as well. While we should be in the present, we should never forget our past, nor forget we’re shaping our future.

If spider has brought it’s medicine into your life, you’re being asked to check your balance and creativity. Are you being as creative as you can be? Have you had the urge to put pen to paper, drawing or writing, and been resisting it? Journaling would be an excellent way to discover what spider wants to bring into your life. Are you balancing yourself properly between the past and present – honoring that your past has brought you to your present and acknowledging that your present with effect your future? Are you allowing the mysteries of life to speak to you, or have you buried yourself in the mundane? Spider brings a lot of heavy questions with her, and you are asked to examine your life closely is she’s speaking to you.
