“There we go. Maybe there’s one that lives right here. And all of them aren’t straight up and down. Some of them are crooked. Trees don’t all grow the same. They grow however makes them happy. There, okay …” — Bob Ross, 1986
I can’t paint. Even by numbers. I try, but unless I’m going for something abstract, it never really comes out right. But I LOVE Bob Ross. I remember watching him with my mother when I was in high school. She could paint better than me and both of her arms had been amputated. After awhile, I stopped trying – I was really just wasting her paint and not getting any better. But I STILL watched Bob Ross with her. He had such an amazingly soothing voice and watching him paint was some variety of zen meditation. It’s really beautiful.
So, today, this quote was posted by a Bob Ross fan page and my heart and my brain both leaped up and cried “Yes, yes, YES! THIS!” Trees DON’T all grow the same. People don’t either. And just because things look a little ‘crooked’ or ‘off’ doesn’t make them bad. We should all grow however makes us happy, trunk, branches, leaves and all.
Thank you, Bob Ross.
